It’s been said that the creative process is an effort at achieving something higher than our ordinary human existence. Some years ago, I developed writer’s block while striving to get closer to my Jewish identity. Reading the words of the old sages brought me through that dark time. Now, I try hard to be like them, though I know I never can. But, hopefully, my own words will touch others, as the sages’ words touched me – even if on a smaller scale.

Heaven help make me a sage open my mind to the words on the page
Let them sink into my soul fill up my heart until I am whole
The ways of the world are so far from me the more I analyze them the more I see
I’m praying to the light of all the ages fill me with the wisdom of the sages
